Rocky Springs History

Rocky Springs Presbyterian Church, organized in 1780, had its humble beginnings in Ireland. The first ministers were Irish and the congregation was of Scottish extraction.

The first church was constructed of hand-hewed logs, had a dirt floor and was located near a spring which gave the church its name. The second church was mainly hand hewed logs with a portion weatherboard.

In 1820, a frame church was erected.  It was replaced in 1855 by a white painted frame building which stood adjacent to the present church building.

The present sanctuary, a two-story brick Georgian church, which is dominated by four white Doric columns and broad stone steps, was constructed in 1920. In 1965, an addition connected the current sanctuary with new classrooms.

Church history was made once again in 2007 when Rev. Deidra Crosby answered a call to become the twenty-sixth installed minister of the church.  She is the first woman to serve the congregation.

Thru the years, the PW of Rocky Springs has always been active and devoted to church members and the community.  In March 2009, the PW hosted the PW Annual Gathering.  For a small church this was challenging and fulfilling at the same time. The same year, the Young Women’s circle was formed.  The Rev. Mrs. Deidra Crosby leads this group in a Bible study that pertains to topics of interest to this age group, cooking being one of the hot topics. The PW of Rocky Springs’ are famous for their cooking.

Each May the women conclude with the Horizon study.  Lisbon and Grace Covenant come for the meal and Bible study.  We also invite a special friend, the Rev. Dr. Joe Gettys. We helped him celebrate his 103rd birthday this past year.

This year our church is celebrating its 230th anniversary.  Rocky Springs plans to celebrate during Homecoming in August and with the Pig Pickin’ in September.

As in years past, the congregation strives to maintain a rich Christian heritage. Rocky Springs continues to conduct active programs of worship, education, and fellowship.
